July 31, 2016 - It has been kind of a tough late summer for training—first, very high temps, and when it finally cooled a bit the air quality in the valley was dismal. Nevertheless, we’ve had a number of stalwart bovines out on the race courses.

Mike and Allison continued to rack up half-irons. Both did the Racine 70.3 in July, and then Allison did the Vichy 70.3 in Auvergne, France. Way to go you two!

Other notable half-iron racers are Cris, who set a PR in Vineman, and Peter, who also completed Vineman. Cris also placed 3rd in age group in the last T4R. Jean-Marc remained on the aquabike circuit, with a finish in the Santa Barbara Aquathlon.

August 14, 2016 We had a good showing in TFF#3. Both Melissa and Josephn came in first in age group--way to go!  Jim came in 4th in age group--looks like he is well on his way to mending past injuries.

Also, Kaleena did the Vineman 70.3 and set a PR--good job, Kaleena!

TFR#3 results -- Andrea won AG and first overall woman!  Jim Carman also won his AG. Well done y'all!

July 31, 2016 - My gosh its been hot out there.  But we still have some dauntless cows racing.

First of all, I missed Steph's appearance in TRF2 during the last update--good job, Steph!

Three cows braved Donner this year. Mathieu, a seasoned veteran of the Olympic, recorded an impressive time of 3:09. Jean Marc has been hammering the aquabike circuit--he did the Donner event after also competing in the Pleasanton Aquabike. Jim L. made a valiant effort to complete the half Iron, and though he had to drop out because of cramping, he definitely deserves 10 pts.

Mathieu also did the always interesting Eppie's for the second time.

July 23, 2016 - Congrats to Melissa Corbett for winning her age group on Saturdays tri for fun.

July 4, 2016 - Despite the brutal temps there has been quite a bit of race action. A few weekends ago Mike and Allison did the Victoria 70.3 for the first time and thought it was a nice race. Both recorded impressive times and division ranks.

Ian braved the heat in TFR#2 and managed to pull off a 2nd place in AG and Jim shook off some persistent injuries and did the TFF#2, coming in 3rd in AG--welcome back Jim.

Mathieu and Diana raced the DUTOES in San Pablo Reservoir in Orinda. Diana did the duathlon and took 2nd in AG. Mathieu raced the "long distance triathlon" consisting of a 3.6 mile run, 22mile (hilly) ride and 4 mile kayak a la Eppie's. He took first in AG and 2nd overall (it helped there were only 5 people in the race).

June 11, 2016 - Diana and Mathieu had a great start to their race season at the Folsom Tri. Diane won in her AG and Mathieu came in third in his--well done y'all!

Couple of corrections--I missed Jean-Marc's 1st place finish in the May TBF TFR and mistakenly reported that Ian came in 2nd in the same race when he actually continued his string of 1st place finishes--way to go Jean-Marc and Ian.

May 30, 2016 - There has been some good race action over past couple of weeks.

Frank showed up again at Auburn, a course he knows well. Glad to see you racing, Frank.

Allison and Mike also did Auburn, with Allison coming in 2nd in AG and setting a PR!

Also, Kaleena got on the scoreboard with her completion of the St. George Half Iron in Utah--way to go, Kaleena. Keep it up!

Finally, Fadi and Ian represented MC at the first T4F/TFR--well done, guys. Ian kept his lead in the Challenge with a 2nd in AG.

Great racing this weekend in the TBF Racing Ice Breaker Triathlon!
Ian Pund got to place first in his age group (40-44) and 10th Overall! The final sprint with 3 athletes was insane, but Ian crossed the line first taking the top 10!!
Cristobal Heitmann also won his age group (30-34) and got to place 6th overall.

Thanks to our sponsors for supporting us!

The racing season is slowly winding down.
Mad Cows members have been taking part in crazy adventures: Kelly does not stop running (cannot keep track of him... he is venturing to any 100k or 100 mile race he can find...), Scott just survived freezing to death in the Bay (read below), JM had the crazy idea to go road bike racing and Cary has become an elite Elliptigo competitor.

This weekend the action was back on the Triathlon scene.
First of all, huge congrats to Cary Craig for her brilliant come-back to IronMan racing!
It sounds like the Elliptigo has healed the hip injury as carry took 3rd/30 in her age group at Ironman Wisconsin in 12:45.

SantaCruz Ironman 70.3
There also was some strong racing in Santa Cruz at Ironman 70.3 (aka Big Kahuna), where Jenny Hebets and Ken Havens did their half ironman debuts with strong performances. Randy Thompson, Big Kahuna veteran (How many times did you race there Randy?), was also brilliantly representing the herd in Santa Cruz.

Don Schug ventured to Oakland by train a few weeks ago for an interesting sprint triathlon where he of course won is age group to consolidate his lead in the challenge.

Hope everybody is still training strong: don't forget Golden State Tri on Oct 11th, last race for the challenge.

Upcoming Swim & Social
Also save the date for Thursday October 1st 6-8pm, I am working on organizing a swim and social event at Get Fit Sport, more information to come soon.

After hearing exciting accounts of recent single sport events (Kelly’s run, Scott’s swim and Jean-Marc’s bike) a report about a triathlon seems pretty humdrum. However, the Oakland Triathlon Festival is worth writing about.

I was looking for a race that differed from the small, rural/suburban Rancho Seco/Granite Bay races. I found it in the 2nd

I felt nervous walking from the hotel to the starting area. Real butterflies. This was a new event for me. In triathlons and trail races, I know what to expect from myself and my body. The Touch Alcatraz ‘n Go Swim was going to be about raw effort and faith in my abilities and strength.

Vineman Half IronMan 7/12

Allison Zwingenberger had a strong PR at the half ironman at Vineman with a 5:53 finish. Mike French, despite sub-optimal training, decided to do more than cheering on Allison and finished the race in 6:08.

Get Fit Triathlon 7/18

Get Fit put together another fun local race event in El Macero. 9 Mad Cows went racing there, representing almost half of the sprint distance field with 8 Mad Cows for 19 total participants! Sara Enders won the race on her birthday. I took 2nd place but won't claim it was to be nice to our new Mad Cow member. After Sara passed me at the beginning of the bike, I never saw her again till the finish line. Nikki Itoi pased Don Schug in a finish sprint for 5th place. Garth Lindley did his first triathlon under the Mad Cows jersey and Staphanie Alder completed her first ever triathlon, congrats! Andy Riffel and Kaleena Jackson added one more race to their already busy season. Fadi Fathallah represented the herd in the super sprint race.

Donner Lake Triathlon 7/26

Donner is usually one of the favorite races of the herd, but for various reason we only had a small crowd over there. Andrea Kirsch came up 8 sec from breaking 3 hours in the Challenging Olympic race taking 2nd place in her age group. Scott Sambucci had a strong performance on the half iron distance with a 5:55 finish for 8th/22 in a very competitive age group.

T4F/T4R 8/1-2

We had 3 bovines at the T4F #3. Led by Don Schug who is having a busy racing season and took 1st in his age group. Keith VonBorstel and Anupama Ganesh were also podium finishers in their age group.
Andrea had recovered well from Donner since one week later she raced T4R. She "only" took 2nd in her age group on this event but her previous T4R performances led her to win the T4R championship. Congrats Andrea! She is now a 4-time winner on this championship.

Folsom Olympic Tri 8/2

On the same day as T4R was another olympic race in Folsom. Ian Pund had a speedy race finishing 3rd in his age group in 2:17:56, which is only 23sec slower than his time at T4R #2 (sorry I had missed that result!). Jean Marc Leininger had a solid race in 2:35, taking 2nd in his age group.

USAT Olympic National Championship 8/8

Allison Zwingenberger traveled to Wisconsin to compete with the top age groupers in the country at the National Championship. She represented the herd with another strong performance (2:35).

Granite Bay Triathlon 8/15

Don Schug was the only Mad Cow at the Granite Bay Tri. JM was ready to race on Sunday but it was a bit too late! Don had a rough race but still finished 3rd in his age group and scored some precious points for the challenge!

I don't think anybody raced for 4th July weekend but the previous weekend was a busy one with Tri For Fun, Tri for Real and California International Triathlon at Pleasanton.

We had 4 people in Tri for Fun # 2 with Andy Riffel. Jim Watson, Don Schug and Keith vonBorstel.
Don won his age group, scoring 20 points for the challenge and clinching a spot on the podium (currently 3rd).

5 bovines were lined up in the Tri For Real. Jennifer hebets had a strong race, cutting almost 10 minutes from her T4F #1 and getting 4th place in age group. Andrea Kirsch won her age group as usual... Alex Martinez completed his first Olympic triathlon and Matt Botting and Rocky Doms added one more race to their already busy season. Note that Matt is is currently in 2nd place for the challenge.

Diana Burkart-Waco and I went to Pleasanton for the California International triathlon for a change of scenery. Quite a big event with almost 500 people in the Olympic race  but a fun event, well organized and with a nice course. Also the Bay Area feels quite a bit cooler than Rancho Seco. It was Diana's first attempt on the Olympic distance and she had a great performance finishing 6 th out of 20 in her age group. Fun fact about this event: the waves are by age group but male and female start together! I barely made it on time to T1 to see Diana take off on her bike.

Also although I usually only report on triathlon races, I still want to mention the very inspiring performance of Kelly Barber completing the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run in 26:37:44. Congrats Kelly! A week later he came riding at the Solano brick as if nothing had happened. And since he never has enough he is now "training" for 120mile race in August!

Kelly Barber - Western States Endurance Run 2015Kelly Barber finishes Western States runKelly started Saturday morning at 5:00 in Squaw Valley and arrived in Auburn at 7:37 Sunday morning. He ran for 26 1/2 hours and 100.2 miles finishing well within the 30 hour limit.

Kelly placed 129 of 388 starters. At the first checkpoint, Lyon Ridge, he was in 193rd place. Through steady running he picked up 67 places by the finish.

The Western States ® 100-Mile Endurance Run is the world’s oldest and most prestigious 100-mile trail race. The Western States run, in the decades since its inception in 1974, has come to represent one of the ultimate endurance tests in the world.

We had a big herd out there! 8 bovines in the sprint on the Saturday and 8 in the Olympic on the Sunday, nice turn out! Also fun to see many faces and hear good stories at the BBQ in West Davis.

Kelly Barber was on a rest day from training for Western State 100 so he came down to Rancho Seco to show us that he has not lost his speed despite the high foot mileage! Kelly was the fastest bovine over taking 3rd in his age group, just ahead of Randy Thompson. I got lucky with an easier age group and despite being slower than Kelly by 2 min, I took 1st in my age group. Don Schug and Keith vB both got 2nd in their age group. Fadi Fathalla and Andy Rippel also had good races. Jim Watson got stuck in traffic on the way so he ended up starting in a women's wave and enjoyed his race!

On Sunday, Andrea Kirsch won her age group. Jean Marc Leininger had to face one really tough competiter and took 2nd place. Scott Sambucci was the fastest bovine out there with a great time for his first race in 2 years but got stuck in a really competitive age group. Ken Havens raced I believe what was his first olympic tri, great job! Jenny Hebets, Matt Botting and Rocky Doms completed the herd with good races.

We met at Steve's Pizza at 6.30pm in Davis.

Members in attendance: Anupama, Diana, Kelly, Mathieu, Peter, Jim, Keith, Ian.

1. What exactly do members get via sponsorship or goodwill money?
Plan is to purchase hats this year for ALL members and alternate between other articles of MC clothing every year such as tech shirts or shorts etc. Plan is to cover the additional costs over and above sponsorship money using membership money.

Suggestions that we are undecided on:
1. To make it mandatory for new members to purchase a MC custom tri kit.
2. To make it mandatory for all members to purchase an article of tri clothing once every two years.

Board to consider the direction we want to move in.

2. Getting the budget together.
We have $2363 in the bank right now after paying for insurance for 2015. Fadi suggested that we can break even every year if we have 50 members.

Questions were raised such as:
1. What do we have money for with and without sponsorship contributions?
2. Are we still a 501c3?
3. What tax do we pay?

3. Pactimo and Tri kits
Play it by ear to see if new members want tri tops this year, unless we decide to make it mandatory for each new member to purchase a tri top.
Anupama to write to Pactimo Rep - Lorri Lee Lown and request if she will come to the season kick off meeting with tri kit samples and sizes.
The Ascent cycling jersey and the Delfino tri top were purchased as part of last years order. This year, they cost:
  • Ascent Jersey: $84 for mens and $84 for womens (must order 5 minimum per gender)
  • Delfino Tri top: $54 for mens and $54 for womens (5 minimum per gender)
Last year Pactimo gave us a waiver i.e. as long as we met the minimums for one gender, they waived the minimums for the other gender. Perhaps they may do that again if we request them.
Going forward, we should talk about uniforms in the Fall of the previous year to get the uniforms produced and delivered on time the following year.

4. Season Kickoff meeting
  • Keith to update time on website to read 6.30-8pm.
  • GFD and TBF will have reps who will talk for a few minutes.
  • Peter and Fadi to print coupons for Round Table Pizza and ~ $200 is allocated for pizza.
  • We should put flyers at the athletic arenas on UCD campus to advertise the kickoff meeting.
 5. Strava
Kelly has created a MC Strava group. He will email the team about this so that we can all sign up and share our workouts with everyone.

6. Hats/Headsweats
Do we order hats/headsweats on amazon and then have InkMonkey embroider or print the MC logo on the hats? And perhaps have one sponsor on the back of the hat? What color hats do we want?

Peter to find out from Ink Monkey if this is possible and cost-effective. Jim to enquire with Screaming Squeegees about costs to print hats.

Haleiwa Sprint Triathlon

Recently, I was fortunate enough to score a business trip to Hawaii, so I looked for a triathlon to do while I was out there. I came up with the Haleiwa Sprint Triathlon on March 2. Haleiwa is an old plantation town on Oahu’s North Shore and has managed to retain some remnants of rural Hawaii charm. The town has been hosting a sprint triathlon for 15 years.

Given the expense and hassle of shipping my bike I decided to rent one.A couple of weeks before the race I contacted Boca Hawaii, a bike shop in Honolulu, and they reserved for me a Fuji Aloha—a decent entry-level tri bike that went for $50/day. I picked it up the day before the race, and the shop owners were great about making adjustments to get a good fit. I then spent about an hour riding around since it handled very differently than my Cervelo.

Guess what? It didn't rain this year!

We had a great turnout with many awards and a delicious picnic afterwards.

"Brian deserves three hearty moos for organizing a great picnic after the Tri for Fun. Also, his renewal of our Power Bar sponsorship is much appreciated. Between those goodies and the Wheelworks discount how can one afford not to be a MC? Let's spread the word about the benefits of membership." -- Don Schug

"...57% of bovines at Rancho Seco got on the podium." -- FrankJ.McNally

Aloha kakou,

I’ll go ahead and post the first MC race report in 2012. I was lucky enough to get a week-long business trip to Hawaii, and since I had to work during the weekdays I decided to return on Sunday so that I could get in some ocean activities. As it turned out I crammed a lot in on Saturday, scuba diving in the morning and sailboat racing in the afternoon.

Late Saturday a friend mentioned that the Valentine's Day Biathlon was the next day. I had a noon flight back to CA, but I was instantly determined to do the race. I had done it, and many other biathlons, when I lived in Hawaii and had many fond memories of those events. There is something so pure and simple about showing up for a race with just running shoes and swim goggles—with wetsuits prohibited, the technology factor is completely removed.

As with a number of other biathlons on Oahu, the 5k run/1k swim Valentine's Day race is held in Ala Moana Park. You run completely around the park and then swim along the semi-enclosed canal along the beach.

The weather during the morning of the race was perfect (duh, it is Hawaii). The race is sponsored by the Waikiki Swim Club, and, as is all their races, it was faultlessly organized. Running nearly flat out, kicking off your shoes, and diving into the ocean (you run with your goggles around your neck) may sound a bit challenging, but its actually a blast.

I wasn’t in very good racing shape since it still is more or less the offseason here in CA, but I felt alright. I managed an age-group second place finish—the guy that always beat me during the 1990s is still racing, and he can still beat me! It being Valentine’s Day race, there was also a couple’s relay. Another great thing about Hawaii biathlons and triathlons are the prizes (and t-shirts)—I snagged a nice wine glass with the race logo. Oh yeah, I caught my flight home with a few minutes to spare.

A hui hou, Don

The Take-It-Easy Workout
Attention, overachievers: The key to getting fit is working out smarter, not harder. Here's how to speed up by slowing down. Really. We mean it.

By Holly St. Lifer (Originally published in the October 2011 issue of More. Sent to us by Nicole Blees.)

It seems like the ideal workout: You go on a run and gradually increase your speed until you hit your sweet spot-a challenging pace that makes you pant but not gasp for air. Once there, you work hard to maintain your stride until, 30 minutes later, you lope back into your driveway, exhausted but invigorated. The next day, you do it again.

Our herd members are out there, stampeding around the state. These are some of the March events they participated in.

Oakland Marathon

In an effort to keep/get people motivated for the season, I thought I'd share my results from the Oakland Marathon (my first ever marathon).

The Oakland Marathon is a wonderful combination of very well run and organized without being huge.  Registration is capped at 1,500 but only 903 people finished this year.  Even with a small number of participants, the city was out in force: the race course was closed to all traffic and cross traffic for 7 hours with police and fire personnel in force manning road blocks.  The course is on city streets, traversing many different neighborhoods.  The first 5 miles are flat to rolling hills, followed by a climb of about 500 feet over 3 miles, leading back to 2 miles of more rolling hills.  From there its a screaming descent of 500 feet over about 1 mile followed by 15 miles of flat running.  There are also about 3,500 people who run a half marathon that day, finishing their run along the same course as the marathon, so it does get a bit thick at the end.  All in all, I think this was a great marathon to run, especially as a first marathon.

I finished in 3:17:10 and placed 10/86 in M40-45 and 50/644 overall.

Bariani Road Race 2011

I did the Bariani Elite 5 road race in Zamora on Sunday. Nice windy day and three 10 mile loops later I came in second after being thoroughly outsprinted by a 21 yr old (he might have been 22). Marianne watched and will attest to the fact that this 40 yr old cow can't sprint.

I did my first off-road triathlon today at Granite Bay, the Xterra Real Mountain bike triathlon.

The announcer kept saying the lake was 50 degrees but down at the beach, Bill Driscoll said it was officially 48.5.
I swam almost head up to the first buoy because every time my face touched the water, my whole body wanted to be somewhere else. The swim was much better after about 500 yds.

The bike was extremely fun. Massive amounts of mud, some of it so deep and soft I had to walk and the mud was halfway up my calf with the water over my knees. In some places the trail was a flowing stream. Apparently this is a really easy mountain bike course. Since I am not a mountain biker, it took me over 2 hrs to ride 16 miles.
There was a challenged athlete who was having a hard time constantly re-attaching his prosthetic leg to his bike pedal in the thick mud. That guy was inspiring.

This race had a mass swim start at 10:00 AM, the latest start I have ever heard of. So definitely a good race for people who have a hard time getting out of bed in the morning.

It was a dark and stormy day. Actually it was a sunny, but cool, spring (almost) day. This is the beginning of the racing season for me. Each year, the first week of daylight saving time, just before I'm really ready, the Putah Creek Time Trial series begins. As usual the group was smaller than it will be in the following trials, probably about 40 cyclists. (Official results are not yet in.)

The time trial is an event where you race against yourself for 10 miles. Cyclists start at 30 second intervals. Drafting is not allowed. The trick is to pace yourself so that at the finish you can't go any faster or any farther. A time trial is great practice for the cycling part of a triathlon. You learn to pace yourself and finish as quickly as you can.

And, as usual, it was windy. The first half was against the wind. It took 17 minutes, I tried for 15. The last 5 miles was with the wind! My slowest was 16.5 mph going out but coming back I hit 27.4 mph for a time of 29:55. Not as fast as I wanted but I can only get faster.

The next time trial is on March 30, 6 PM. See you there.

What do you know about buy generic levitra? Also, think about buy vardenafil. Generally, both men and women suffer from sexual heartiness problems. A common class of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, which include Zoloft, may cause problems in bed. To reduce the risk of unwanted side effects of Kamagra avoid using any other medicines without preliminary discussion with your pharmacist. Do not use such remedy without telling your dispenser if you are pregnant.

Rain, Mud, Hills, Long Climbs, Treacherous Downhills and 20 Miles of Mostly Awesome

I started this morning asking "Why?" Mostly, this was my next test along the way in preparation for my first 50K run set for December 4 at the North Face Endurance Challenge.  Wanted to see where I was and figured 33k in many of the same trails with the climbs would be a good test about a month away.   This race was organized by Pacific Coast Trail Runs. Couple of aid stations - really well-stocked. Mostly kept in good spirits along the way.  Why else take on such things, right?

The elevation and rain pictures should tell you all you need to know. It was raining. Like really raining.  Like - "holy cow, I really can't believe it's really raining this hard." No pictures from the trail b/c I didn't want to waterlog my Droid.  Mud pretty much all the way.  A few brutal climbs - the very last one was particularly well-placed and entirely uncalled for, in a good way... :--)

West Sacramento hosted it's first annual Pumpkin Run Saturday at the River City High School/West Sacramento Recreation Center complex Saturday morning.  The 5 K and 10 K races were a fund raising event hosted by the Aquatics Foundation of West Sacramento.

I knew from the moment I stepped off the plane onto the stairs leading to the tarmack of the Kona airport that this year was going to be different.  How?  I didn't dare to venture a guess but it would be different, I was certain.  In past years, when I have made that first step off the plane a wave of intense heat radiating off of the runway and surrounding black lava has washed over me as a sharp reminder of where I have just arrived.  This year it was overcast and raining, bordering on chilly.  As I always do, I went for a short "Hello Island!" run as soon I was checked into my condo.  It had stopped raining, the air was still cool and the humidity was about 220%.  Hello, Big Island!

The days leading up to the race seemed different from past years.

First the Island.  She was showing many different sides of herself in a short period of time, ranging from gentle and tranquil to fierce and wild.  Crystal clear, calm waters for a totally relaxing swim.  Crazy crosswinds from which legends are born for a harrowing, white knuckle bike ride.  Blazing sun with intense heat.  Torrential downpours with wild lightning.

Next the demeanor of the event.  It seemed the tension level was dialed back from normal.  Ali'i Drive did not feel like a coiled up rattlesnake, it felt a bit more relaxed and kicked back.  Perhaps this had more to do with a shift in me than an actual shift in everyone.  I felt fit, healthy, prepared and calm.

Race Report – Ironman 70.3 Austin Adjacent

This race was a fairly late addition to my season – in fact it wasn’t even on my schedule until a month ago.

Christoph Goub and I were the only Mad Cows in the DLT Int'l  last Sunday.

For any female cows, Barb's Race is a great way to enter the field of Half Ironman.  It is the only all women's Half Ironman.  It is held the same day as the Full Vineman, so the course is pretty much open for the full ironman time, ie no time pressure, you can just enjoy the process and learn from it.
The Folsom Olympic Distance Triathlon last Sunday at Nimbus Flats was well attended by seasoned triathletes from the Sacramento and bay area.

Ran the San Francisco Marathon this morning.  Went much better than I thought.  Woohoo!  As always, a huge thank you to Lena, my awesome wife and supporter in my craziness for such things. Getting up at 4:20am is not fun, especially when you're not even the one racing.

Dan Sweet wins Tri for Fun #3 by 2 minutes 29 seconds

Summertime means vacations and barbecues for most, but for Mad Cows Racing, it's high tri-season and time to host a great mid-year clinic! On Wednesday, the Mad Cows gathered at Davis Swim and Fitness (one of our awesome sponsors - thanks Tammy!) for a swim clinic hosted by Steve Sexton.  If you don't know Steve, check out his website at www.trisexton.com.  He's a Davis, CA native and is a member USA Triathlon’s Project 2012 national team, training to qualify for the London Olympic games in 2012.  Last weekend, Steve took second at the ITU San Francisco Pan American Cup - his first race in seven months after recovering from injury.

Steve spent over an hour with the team fielding questions about nutrition, training, and racing tips.  He also jumped in the pool to show technique and drills.  Great stuff - we're honored to have Steve as a guest speaker and are already looking ahead to another date on the calendar with him!

A recap of his pointers and drills is forthcoming. (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.)

Morning of race

I got to transition early, around 5:20.  I don’t like being late and didn’t know how much traffic there would be getting to the start.  I dropped off my special needs bags off.  Then I checked my bike and loaded my bottles.

Yes, it's long and quite detailed, but I promise it won't take you as long to read as it took me to write, let alone actually do the race.  I've tried to make it both entertaining and informative.

UCD Sprint Race Report 2010 by Cary Craig

Sunday I raced my first multisport event for the 2010 season. An intercollegiate sprint triathlon hosted by UC Davis that is open to non-collegiate athletes. It was a ~750 yard pool swim, 18 mile bike and 4 mile run. It is always a very fun, kind of wild (made wilder by weather this year) event.

Racing from far away places was Cary Craig. She raced Ironman Brazil. Distances were 2.4 mi. swim, 112 mi. bike and 26.2 mi. run. She placed 1st in her age group and qualified for Ford Ironman Championship in Kona Hawaii. Looking at the race results, it looks like she was trailing the whole race and passed the #1 person on the run, giving her a 14 minute win.

I spent the past 3 weeks in the backwoods of Georgia hanging out with my sister and brother-in-law and training with them for triathlons. I was really bummed to miss the Mad Cows Tri-for-Fun, but we managed to participate in two other great races.

We had a great weekend of racing at TBF Tri for Fun at Rancho Seco. There were a lot of Mad Cows out there, many who raced and many who just came out to show support. Not only did we have an awesome showing of numbers, we were prominent on the podium. The overall male and female finisher received overall champion awards. Those that placed in the top 5 of their age group received awards.

The Mad Cows receiving awards for the TBF Tri for Fun are Diana Cox, Kristen Alexander, Peter Dempster, Cody Ross, Curtis Fritz and Keith vonBorstel.

Daniel Sweet received the overall champion award for first overall finisher.

Congratulations to all the Mad Cows for a great race.

Auburn Triathlons - Sunday, May 23, 2010

by Frank McNally

The herd had several fine performances at the Auburn Triathlons yesterday.
The start featured air temp in the 40's and water temp of 64 so there was steam
rising up from the surface of the lake.
